Help Protect Your Home with these Security Tips
Protecting your home with an ADT monitored security system is just one of the steps you can take to help keep your home as safe as possible. These are a few additional ways you can help protect your home and your family:
Imagine "burglarizing" yourself. You'll discover any security weaknesses that may have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Always lock your home, even if you only go out briefly. Most burglars enter homes through unlocked doors or windows.
Change all door locks and key codes when you move into a new house.
Don't leave notes for deliveries or services on your door. Burglars view these as invitations to an empty home.
Keep spare keys with a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member instead of hiding them under a doormat or somewhere else burglars may look.
Make sliding doors and windows more secure by placing a piece of wood or metal along the track. Make sure it is the same size as the track. This will prevent the door or window from being opened from the outside.
Have the blinds and drapes shut, especially in rooms with valuable equipment, so you don't advertise what is in your home.
Check the locks on your home to ensure they are working properly and replace any that aren't. All exterior doors should have at least a one-inch deadbolt lock.
When you're away, make sure your home doesn't appear empty. Leave your lights on timers, put the mail and newspaper on hold, and have someone check on your house from time-to-time. Also, turn your telephone ringer to the lowest volume setting. An unanswered phone may tip off a burglar that no one is home.
Install a peephole in your doors and always check to see who is on the other side of the door before opening it. Also, teach children never to answer the door without you there.
